30 Million Under The Eclipse
Client: The Simons Foundation
Identity System, Brand Asset Development, Collateral
On April 8, 2024, portions of the United States witnessed a breathtaking total solar eclipse. The Simons Foundation was committed to helping ensure that those millions of people in the path of totality had an unforgettable experience.
The Sun and the Moon did most of the work. But the communities that make up the towns in the path did the rest. And while the entire country experienced a partial eclipse on that April day, Simons focused efforts on places directly within the path of totality. These communities have less access to science engagement opportunities and resources than those in larger cities like New York or San Francisco.
With carefully formed partnerships, Simons provided financial and capacity-building support to institutions and communities along the path of totality — science museums, cultural centers, local artists, small businesses, and more.
To help spread awareness for this incredible celestial event, Space Agency partnered with The Simons Foundation to craft a highly adaptable identity system.
The core word-mark dynamically shifts to accommodate a range of applications, operating on a spectrum from the national and state levels, to individual town and city activations.
The type system is warm and inviting, inspired by familiar motifs from small-town Americana signage.
From Eagle Pass, Texas, to Houlton, Maine, millions of Americans congregated beneath the shadow of the moon – In The Path of Totality. We’re rarely afforded opportunities for shared joy and wonder at this scale. For those of us in the path, this eclipse connected us, even if only for a few minutes.
